Introduction to Photography
Exercise 1: Presentation of 10 of your best-liked pictures
Lecture:
This evening, Mr Vinod greeted us and started our first class by letting us introducing ourselves. He also asks us if we have had any experience with photography before and my answer was no, because I honestly did not know how to use the camera (dslr) manually as because it is hard to control and I did not understand whats the functions and stuff. Since i was initially interested in taking this subject as my chosen elective, I might as well stick with it.
He then briefed us about the subject's main purpose and calmed us down because probably our faces looked very worried about the course's outline. He also showed us few of his photograph-works that he has done as a professional photographer and he managed to put us in awe as he showed us the photographs one by one.
Later, he gave us our first assignments and briefed to us with details as to what we should do. He also informed us that the links to the senior's blogs will be posted/given to help us view it as guidelines throughout the course.
Instructions:
1. Create a new blog (with appropriate link name)
2. Read and follow the e-portfolio example on the post at the yourbrief.wordpress.com
3. Write our e-portfolio for this week
4. Embed the link of the youtube video on the blog
5. Post the e-portfolio on the facebook page under Mr Vinod's welcome post.

Instructions for Exercise 1
Exercise 1: Presentation of 10 of your best-liked pictures – 5%
In this exercise students will explain the reasons they like the chosen pictures, what they found interesting when taking/choosing or after taking/choosing the picture. Students’ have to choose pictures that are not their own as well but must credit and explain the circumstances of the picture. Student will present 5 pictures of their own and 5 pictures of 5 different photographers. By this process students exercise their ability to discern and reflect on what makes a good image theoretically.

These days, teens socialise through instagrams, posting their chosen parts of lives to be shown to the world. Polaroids originally were symbollic to create a more tumblr-ish style to the feed. I actually saw a few of the blogger people that I followed, they create this cool flat photography called flatlay and I totally fell in love with the flatlay idea. I tried a few times to get a perfect flatlay photography because flatlay has to be taken parallel to the ground. This photo, is one of the photo that I am very satisfied of the flatlay outcome. This picture is also my favourite because the polaroids consists of the people that I treasure. Picture taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone.

A few months back, I went to South Korea and was able to visit this beautiful tourist attraction spots called The Mount Sorak. The mountain looks very breathtaking as it looks grey-ish and classic because it was still the winter season at the moment. The fog also adds a mysterious and cool feeling to the picture, which people can tell that its cold there. Another thing is, I was amazed at how my phone was able to capture the details of the mountain, the snowflakes can be seen on the branches of the trees. This picture quickly became one of my favourite picture. Picture taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone.
3.

During the trip to South Korea, I also visited Everland, the largest theme park in South Korea. I didn't had the time to ride all of the rides and so I took a picture of one of the large roller coasters during the evening. What I like about this picture is how the sun shines through the roller coaster's rail. It is as if it shows the beauty of the structure of the roller coaster. I also like how the trees and everything below the roller coaster looks dark so that the eyes only focuses on the subject here: the roller coaster. Picture taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone.
4.

This one, is also a picture I took while I was on my visit to South Korea. This is a part of the Gyeongbokgung palace, the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. I was informed by the tourist guide that the building was renovated here and there in order to maintain the building. What took my breath away was of how amazing this palace was designed and structured. Eventhough it has been renovated to maintain the building, I bet it doesn't change much of the building's original structure. I purposedly took a slightly lower and tilted angle to get a larger view of the beautiful roof on the camera. I really love the colours that are put together for under the roof part. Not to mention the details it has. Amazing. Picture taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone.
5.

This picture is also one of the pictures I took during my trip to Korea. The vehicles were moving fast during the moment and I was so intrigued by the lights, which people usually call it as city lights. I took a few shots and this came out as good because the vehicles can be seen that its moving fast. Other than that, I really like the lights from the buildings and vehicles, how it made as if the scene is alive, making it looks busy. Picture taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone.

Joey Lawrence, or commonly known as Joey L was best known as creator of Twilight Movie posters.
When I first visited his official website (http://www.joeyl.com/overview/category/quick-portfolio), I was very much amazed by his photography skills. There was this collection where he took pictures of a few celebrities, and I chose Jennifer Lawrence because she is one of the actresses that I like watching. I like this photo, mainly because of how clear the detail of this picture is. The front hair strands of Jennifer's hair can be seen very clearly. I also like how he matches the subject with the colour, for example Jennifer's hair and jacket matches the wall behind, making it look harmonized. [source]

This landscape of nature was taken by Denis Rouvre, a french photographer. This picture was under his collection called "Low Tides". The collection came together w a few portait photos of Asian men and women in their late 70s. I just originally like landscape pictures with natures and surroundings because it gives a calming feel. I like this photo because of how the trees are aligned, giving us an insight that there is a slight to a left turn there. I also like how the snow and the dirt looks together, the contrast colours makes the snow stand out. [source]

Zack Arias is an editorial and commercial photographer based in Atlanta, GA. After working in the music industry for seven years, he branched into more editorial work and advertising. I like this picture because it focuses really well on the subject: the lady. I also like the colour combination of how the white shirt contrasts with the navy blue background, so the lady appears focused in the picture. [source]
9.

Erik Almas, initially didnt have great interest in pictures, nor even art. He questioned himself to "what do I do now?" and was suddenly soaked up in the idea of becoming a photographer. This picture caught my interest because the boy is drawing a crane and a part of the crane came to life. Its as if the boy's dream or goal is somehow achieved. Started small, from making a drawing, then creating/having the crane itself. [source]
10.

Lee Towndrow was a designer when he started. He made album covers and become flame artist. Lee Towndrow take beautiful candid pictures. Photos he took are equipped with details and clarity. This photo above was taken under "The Nineteen Twenties" projects. The project has such beautiful photos with harmonised colours in every photo. I like the picture above because of the neutral colours of the ladies' dresses and the details of their headpiece. I also like how every strand of the feather can clearly be seen here. [source]

Presentation of video (through Youtube)
Feedback
Farah, with regards to your content, you articulated, analysed and explained your reasons for choosing the pictures presented fairly well, and in addition credited the photographers as required in the criteria, well done! You were clear and concise in your presentation fulfilling the necessary requirements of the criteria, however I see that you had issues with the music for the video presentation which could have set the tone – although this is not necessary per se. Overall good job, keep it up. --- Your eportfolio was clean neat and according to instructions and the reflections were insightful and I look forward to reading more of it whence the exercises begin. The experience section of the video contained some aspects that could have been in the observation and findings. In the reflection, the most imporant parts are the observation and findings, so much reflection is done on those two sections. It is great that you realized that you need to complete your work in advance just incase you encounter a problem on the way, I like that! Keep it up!
Reflection
Experience :
It was interesting to search for pictures which I find favour of. Because it depends on me, for whatever reasons I chose the pictures. When Mr Vinod informed us that we have to edit the video with voiceovers for explanation then upload the video to Youtube, I was quite concerned because I am quite shy to talk (even using voiceovers!) . But i was already informed by the lecturers that designers need their confidence so I shall just give it a shot.
Choosing the self shot pictures at first, was a big burden to me because I thought my pictures were really not that good. I was contemplating whether I should photograph new ones just for the assignment, but in the end I chose too much that it was hard for me to choose just 5.
Doing the video, too, was a huge challenge for me as I have never tried to upload a video on Youtube. Also, I was a total noob on using iMovie because I've never even bothered using the app. When I uploaded the video at first, my video was automatically muted because I was using a copyrighted song as background music and I was really shocked because I reached the deadline to submit the assignment. I quickly reopen the iMovie and redo the voiceover. Which results in uploading the video late. I learnt my lesson though, to never procrastinate and quickly get an assignment done.
Observation :
I find that I really like to take pictures of the surrounding like natures, buildings, sceneries, etc. I did not notice that until I was scrolling through my gallery for pictures which I have taken in the past. I took a lot of scenery pictures.
Findings :
In a nutshell, I think learning photography will be very interesting because I am into the art of photography. I like to take pictures now but I didn't quite have the right skills.
I am also excited to explore and learn on how to use the camera manually so i can use it to my best and produce pictures that can come out exactly how I wanted them to be.
