BIG, Publika
On 24th November, we had a mini class trip to Publika, Sri Hartamas to visit KLPF (Kuala lumpur Photography Festival) 2017. We were asked to have a look around and choose 3 photos that we like and give reasons why.
I find this photo to be very interesting because of the strong contrast. First, there's a contrast in the background, in terms of lighting. Can be seen bright areas and dark areas. The contrast made the wires and lines appear to be prominent, and that looks interesting. But the most evident contrast is the red subject in a black and white background. The male seems to be riding a motorcycle and his red attire is the most apparent contrast in this picture. Despite all the contrasts happening, the picture looks balanced. This is because the strongest contrast (the male in red attire) is at the center of the photo and gets only takes up a small area of the photo. This strong contrast balanced out the big contrast happening at the background.
This photo attracts my attention because this style is similar to Instagram's famous 'flatlay' style. Usually instagrammers would take pictures like this but of food or items that are laid out on a flat surface. Doing this requires focus, height and of course, skills. It is important that you shoot it straight down, so the photo turns out pretty.
Doing the mentioned style on items that are laid out on the table are easier, depending on situation. But doing it while focusing on spaces (like in the picture, top right where he takes picture of tables and a male walking), that to me, is quite a challenge. This means, the photographer has to go somewhere higher and take a really straight 90 degree photo. I am very impressed of how the photos turned out, it looks great.
This series is my ultimate favourite. This project was done by a student from Alice Smith International School. I even read the entire process done for this project. The message was very powerful and the photos were able to deliver the message across, which to me is an important trait you need to embed when shooting photos. The message needs to be clear.
This photo is one of the final photos in the project. The student did a 3D edit onto the final photo and we were given 3D glasses (attached on the folio). Once we were them and close one eye, we'd get image depending on the colour on the glasses (refer to photos above). I find this to be very smart and it could also deliver message.
From my understanding, the girl is experiencing an abusive relationship. The male seems to not want to understand the female or love her. Because of the pain, the girl has black stains on her face and body. Also, in my opinion, the rose could symbolise their 'love' and it looks wilted and the girl is holding the rose, looking out for it, making sure it does not die. Probably it is what she is experiencing, the female are always looking after the relationship, mending it to make it work while the male does not even care of the pain he inflicted on her or even mending the love they have.
