Exercise 6: Basic Lighting
Lecture
Lecture class today was not really that long. Mr Vinod explained to us about the lighting and types of lights. He also showed us portraits of people with different lighting, which creates different look to the person. After that, we moved to Photo Studio 2 and Mr Vinod showed us the equipments also the steps on how to use it. He also reminded us to take a good care as the equipments are fragile and costly. We then proceed to doing the studio lighting portrait shooting, according to the student's chosen picture in the early 90s.

Studio Lighting Exercise (not graded)
Period picture.
Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.

Posed or reactive is totally up to you. But can you please explain what reactive means?
When you do a portrait series of a single person you must remember to vary it. So the 5 images should ideally have some difference in pose/angle/composition/etc.
The images you shot, the lighting seems insufficient. Please don't capture images using indoor lights. Use window light (sun light), indirect light, etc., as long as the source is the sun.
Your portrait series can be of the same person, or 5 diff people in a family, or 5 people in the same line of work, etc. as long as there is a relationship between the 5

Reflections
Experience
It was my first time visiting the Photo Studio 2. I was amazed with the equipments: from the lights to the backdrop. While Mr Vinod showed us the step-by-step guide on how to adjust the light according to the chosen picture, I was truly amazed of how good the picture came out when Ilana tried to take test shots (and its not even the real deal shot yet!) After Mr Vinod guided us through two shoots, he let us to handle the rest of the shoot by ourselves to work as a team.
Apparently I was next. I could not contain the excitement when everyone was so serious on working the lighting and making sure I get my angles right, so every time they are ready to shoot, I laughed hahahahahaha.
Working on the others' photos was not that hard... until we saw Hazel's. We tried and tried but the lighting seems to not work. So, we decided to do the bulb shot (shutter speed: bulb). It was difficult but we tried again and again until we were satisfied enough. The result was not bad so we agreed on the photo.
Doing the portrait for my theme-based was quite a challenge as I actually ran out of idea of which theme to choose. I reckon my theme that i did last week was not very convincing as me myself is not really that satisfied with what I did. So I tried to change the theme which I hope I can work better on.
Observations
I noticed that different posistion of lighting can distort and change the contour of a person's face. I also noticed that angles of a person's face makes the face looks different somehow.
Findings
I realised that studio lighting is a wonderful thing to learn in photography as I gained much experience. Also, I realised that lighting can distorts the shape and contour of a person's face so its important to play around with the position to get better lightings and shadows.
(theme-based project) I realised that shooting indoors is a very very bad idea. It does not give enough amount of light to give enough exposure to my subject. I shall take that as a lesson and avoid doing it in the future.
